More than 20 years after the last of the iconic ZiL limousines rolled off the production line in Russie, the model is poised to make a comeback that is billed to set a precedent not just for the eastern community, but possibly for the world.
The last ZiL limousine to be built was the Zil-41072, which rolled onto Russian soil in the early 90’s. Having always been a symbol of Russian power and prestige, it is hardly surprising that the brand failed to be banished, despite more than 20 years of taking a back seat.
Crafted exclusively for President Putin, the new ZiL has raised the bar in the field of executive limos’ and took the breath of the world away when it was unveiled on the 28th October via the federal Russian television in all its glory. Named the ZIL-4112P prototype, this particular brand of executive limo boasts a globally warming 7.7l engine and a slightly more environmentally friendly six speed automatic box.
The director of ZiL’s limousine production commented on the new model, stating that the company had endeavoured to retain the generic features of the original and highly iconic car, whilst still adding a touch of modern flair to it. The mirrors, lighting and general silhouette of the car remained true to tradition, distinguishing it readily from the Mercedes and other executive cars of its class.
In the past, the original ZiL limousine held a respectable rank in the world of Russian politics, having transported well known leaders such as Boris Yeltsin and Leonid Brezhnev around Russia and Internationally. However, not everyone is pleased with the new design.
Oleg Datskiy, the Director of Auto Dealer, a Russian car dealership, stated in a press release that the production of limousines in Russia was an unrealistic and unnecessary project. He believed that the production of limousines ‘in house’ was something that died along with the iron curtain, and that in a modern society it was more cost effective to buy quality executive transport from countries like Germany, rather than go through the expense of domestic production again.
Other agencies in Russia appeared to have similar reservations, although the motoring industry in general has appeared to be highly appreciative of the new limousine design, as they are in general of the return of the ZiL to the international executive car fleet.
